We are Fly Doncaster Ltd, a newly formed operating company set up to mobilise, reopen and manage the running of Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Established by the City of Doncaster Council, we are committed to establishing a top-class regional airport and maximising its potential to bring economic growth to the region.

The Airport

Doncaster Sheffield operated as a commercial airport between 2005 and 2022. Today this means the site already boasts an established terminal, several hangars and top-class facilities. Having this infrastructure in place, alongside an excellent proximity to transport links, makes it the ideal location for both passenger and commercial flights.

Security Chief hired as Doncaster Sheffield Airport reopening activity ramps up

Aviation industry veteran David Openshaw has been appointed as the Head of Security Operations at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, a role which will oversee vital operational functions as the site gears up for reopening.

His appointment is one of several new hires at the airport, which is seeing significant growth in activity with teams across functions such as HR, procurement and operations working to bring the site back to life.

In a career spanning several continents, as well as troubleshooting at major UK airports, David brings a wealth of aviation security experience to the expanding team, as crucial milestones are targeted.

David Openshaw, Head of Security Operations at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “Having worked in aviation security for many years and the armed forces before that, this role represents one of the proudest moments of my career, standing out as one that is particularly professionally rewarding as we oversee the reopening of this airport. Technology and regulation has moved at pace over recent years, therefore ensuring that Doncaster is at the forefront of these advances will be a key aspect of this role.

“Rebuilding a security operation from the ground up is a unique challenge and working as part of such an innovative and energetic team is a rare and exciting prospect. I look forward to contributing to developing a new generation of aviation talent and acting in a mentoring capacity here at Doncaster, while contributing to the airport’s long-term success.”

Programme Director for the airport reopening project, Christian Foster, added: We’ve been extremely fortunate to have individuals with significant aviation experience, like David, apply for roles in this exciting project. Having overseen security operations for numerous airports, he brings an enormous amount of knowledge and talent to the role, while having one eye on developing a sustainable future for the site and encouraging the next generation of security professionals to fulfil their potential.

“As activity significantly ramps up over the crucial months ahead, we’ll be announcing more senior hires as we put in place the right team to deliver this project for Doncaster and the wider region.”

On a day-today basis, the role will oversee all aspects of security strategy, including: workforce planning; deployment of security resources; all aspects of recruitment including, vetting, and training activities; ensuring full compliance with ICAO Standards; and acting as the primary liaison with the UK Civil Aviation Authority, Police, and UK Border Force.

David and his wife have lived in the Doncaster area since 2009 and he has previously provided consultancy services to the airport when it was previously open.  He added: "I see my contribution to the airport’s revival not only as a professional commitment but also a deeply personal one and I look forward to some very exciting milestones ahead.”

His appointment comes as the recruitment drive gathers pace at the airport, with the latest recruitment event being held at Doncaster Racecourse on Wednesday 11 February. Future recruitment opportunities discussed during the event included: Security; Project Managers; Fire Service Watch Managers; Fire Safety Managers; Health and Safety Managers.
