Doncaster Sheffield Airport welcomes 14 newly recruited firefighters
The recruited personnel, who join an existing management team already in place at the airport, bring a wealth of experience from local authority fire and rescue services, other UK airports and the RAF. Their arrival strengthens DSA's growing Fire & Rescue Service, which will ultimately be 50-strong by the time the airport reopens.
The team is already playing a key role in mobilisation activities across the airport, supporting emergency planning, operational readiness, fire safety and preparations for future flight operations. They are also undertaking airfield familiarisation, equipment familiarisation, training exercises and planning activities to ensure the highest standards of safety and resilience are in place ahead of reopening.
Later this month, 14 of the newest recruits, comprising 10 firefighters and four crew managers, will attend a two-week residential training programme at Newcastle Airport's Fire Training Academy.
The specialist aviation training will cover aircraft construction, aviation fuel fires and the complex hazards associated with both civilian and military aircraft. Crew managers will also receive training in leadership, incident command and decision-making, helping to develop the skills required to lead emergency response operations in an airport environment.
The residential programme will enable the team to train and work together in realistic operational scenarios while building the close working relationships that are essential in emergency response roles.
Wes Bunting, Head of Fire & Emergency Planning at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: "We have assembled a fantastic team, bringing together a diverse group of experienced firefighters from airports, local authority fire and rescue services and the RAF. Each team member brings a different set of skills, and this specialist training is an important next step in preparing them for the unique challenges of aviation firefighting.
"The residential programme will help the team develop vital operational skills while building the strong relationships and teamwork that are essential in emergency response roles. It's another significant milestone as we continue preparing for future operations and creating skilled career opportunities for local people.”
